Why a brand identity is more than just a logo
A strong brand identity creates recognition and trust. Discover how colour, typography and imagery can build a brand that sticks.
A logo is the starting point, not the end goal
Many entrepreneurs think their brand is complete once the logo has been designed. But a logo alone doesn't tell a story. It's merely a hook on which you hang the rest of your identity. Without a well-thought-out brand identity, that hook just hangs in mid-air.
A brand identity is the sum of visual choices that together create a recognisable image: colours, typography, use of imagery, design, and even the tone of your communication. It ensures that customers recognise your brand instantly, whether they visit your website, hold a flyer in their hands or see your social media pass by.
Think of major brands like Coca-Cola or Apple: you recognise them not just by their logo, but by the entire experience. That is the power of a consistent brand identity.
Colour and typography: the silent messengers
Colour is one of the most powerful tools in your brand identity. It largely determines the emotion you evoke. Blue inspires trust and calm, red stands for energy and action, green for sustainability and growth. So don't choose your colours based on personal taste, but on the image you want to project.
Typography does at least as much. A playful typeface suits a creative agency, a clean sans-serif typeface suits a law firm. It's not just about readability, but also about the personality you convey. Use a maximum of two typefaces in your brand identity to keep it clear.
It's important to document your colours and typefaces in a brand guide. This prevents every employee or supplier from giving their own interpretation to your brand. Consistency is the key to recognition.
Imagery: show your brand without words
Imagery is often the first thing people pick up on. A photo or illustration can convey a feeling in a fraction of a second. Yet many brands barely pay attention to this. They choose standard stock photos that everyone uses, which actually makes them inconspicuous.
A strong imagery means that you define what kind of images suit your brand. Is it about real people at work, abstract shapes, warm colours or minimalist black and white? Do you choose photography or illustrations? And which style fits: documentary-like, posed, or spontaneous?
By providing clear guidelines for this, you ensure that all your expressions — from social media to your website — breathe the same atmosphere. That strengthens your brand and makes you instantly recognisable, even without a logo in sight.
From brand identity to brand experience
A brand identity is not a static document that you create once. It is a living system that expresses your brand at every touchpoint. Think of your website, your quotes, your emails, your events, your office interior and even the way you speak on the phone. Everything contributes to the overall experience.
It's precisely in the events industry that you see how important this is. An event that is visually fully in line with the brand identity feels professional and well thought out. Visitors know immediately where they are, even before they have read a word. That creates trust and strengthens the bond with your brand.
So invest not just in a beautiful logo, but in a complete brand identity that brings your brand to life on all fronts. It is an investment that pays off in recognition, trust and ultimately in customers who keep coming back.
